No Champers on the Beach in Dubai

Dubai has promoted itself as the most progressive vacation spot on Earth. But British visitors Michelle Palmer and Vince Acors will doubtless argue that point as they are just recently released from custody of the Dubai constables. The couple were enjoying a champagne brunch on the white sands surrounding their resort hotel when there were unceremoniously arrest for illegal displays of public affection.

The degree of their ardor remains in dispute as Dubai authorities agreed to suspend the pair’s 90 days jail sentences and to request both leave the country after payment of a small fine.

Dubai is unique in that the vast majority of its population are ex-pats while the country is governed… and strictly governed at that, by a conservative Muslim minority. The contrast as to amenities is amazing. Most of the hotels in Dubai are five star operations stressing intense personal service. Wealthy guests are courted though promotion worldwide. Yet upon arrival visitors learn that drinking alcoholic beverages and wild public displays of affection exist in various states of illegality.

One may drink while dining but walk the street with a bottle of beer in hand and you will not be alone for long. Any affection shown that consists of more than a handshake or peck on the cheek may also result in police involvement.

It just goes to show that no matter how relaxed you get whilst abroad, it is still important to remember that
you are in somebody elses country, and what is appropiate behavour at home, may not be classed as appropiate whilst in said country.
