New and excessive baggage fees have tourists leaving their Ski gear at home.

With most airlines charging $50.00 per extra bag or item checked. Ski vacationers have taken to traveling light. Consider that the cost of checking in two pairs of skis, a snowboard, two pairs of boots, and a bundle of ski apparel will increase the cost of a flight by $250.00… each way.

No wonder skiers on holiday are all opting to pack a toothbrush and clean socks then rent their gear on arrival in the snow caps. Rental companies and ski lodge shops are reporting almost double their usual volume.

Most Pro shops for lodges are stocking for rental, high end skis as opposed to the entry level gear for the novice that has long been their mainstay. Trekkers to the highlands find they could almost afford to buy new skis and boots on arrival for the cost of toting their gear on the plane.

Added to the cost is the sheer joyless task of going through security check points with anything more than a backpack or purse. One wonders as the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010 approach if more people will be traveling to the Whistler ski resorts by automobile and omnibus.

As it stands many American travelers are finding it cost effective to “FedEx” their luggage to and from their destinations.
