Delays are expected at JFK International Airport in New York, as the main runway has been closed to begin a four-month construction project. This delay could cause a rise in ticket prices.

This main runway, Runway 13-31 is one of the longest runways in the world and is used for over half of the departures. The reconstruction and widening project is part of an overall plan to reduce delays at the airport.

However, at this time, that means delays for millions of travelers, even some nowhere near the Big Apple. That’s because there will be longer lines for takeoffs and landings, and diverted flights.

Airlines have adjusted their schedules, cutting some flights from JFK which has caused an increase in ticket prices. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) believes that delays at the airport are expected to be around 50 minutes at peak periods and 29 minutes on average, according to reports.

A “traffic management program” is in operation and passengers are advised to check with the FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center and their airline for details of departure and arrival delays.

“These projects have a single goal: to give every one of our 48 million annual customers at JFK a more efficient, passenger-friendly airport,” said Port Authority Chairman Anthony Coscia. “This robust investment also is creating construction jobs – more than 1,000 workers in the peak period – which is certainly welcome news in the present economy.”
