Drunk in Charge of a Horse – Arrested under a law dating back to 1872!

Godfrey Blacklin, who is 31 years old, was arrested under a law dating back to 1872, which makes an offence of being “drunk in charge of a carriage horse, cattle or steam engine.” This offence is punishable by a fine, or prison sentance of up to one month.
Luckily for Mr. Blacklin, Newcastle Magistrates meerly gave him a fine of £185, and additional court costs of £35.
Drunken Horse Exercise
Mr. Godfrey is quoted as saying:
“I had only had a couple of cans and Bart needed some exercise.”
The police ‘pulled over’ Mr. Blacklin when they saw him swerving down the road on his trusty steed, and said that the 31yr old unmounted and smelt of alcohol and appeard unsteady.
Mr Blacklin was riding bareback.
